Whyalla

Port Lincoln according to the natives is the windiest city in Australia and judging from the caravan park we would have to agree although the Whyalla people try to lay claim to the same fame. We could not put the awning out in either place and listened to the wind howl and shake the van.
Port Lincoln was a pleasant enough town and here we had the juiciest rock lobster with salad that you could imagine so that alone made the trip worthwhile. Here we also replaced two tyres as Rob found a spike in the wall of one and being careful we chose to replace the set. Apart from that we visited a couple of galleries and vegged out.

The trip from Port Lincoln to Whyalla was fairly uneventful with a tail wind and overcast. On the way we called in to Port Arno and Cowell but decided to go on to Whyalla for three days. This is another town that surprised us. Even though Onesteel has a big operation here there was not as much pollution as we expected. We visited Hummock Hill lookout and the Flinders and Freycinet lookout which gave a lovely view of the Marina. We also drove out to the lighthouse at Port Lowly where Santos has a plant. The Maritime Museum and the tour of the Corvette Whyalla was a worthwhile experience as was the tour of the Onesteel operation where we saw the rolling operation of turning block steel into railway lines, a liquid slag pour and coke dump from the ovens - wow. We did take a printout about the steelworks process which we were told was very useful for school projects?!

We then drove on to Port Augusta where we will stay for three days before wending our way to Adelaide to arrive there on the 15th.
